Off Wisconsin
Then Wisconsin Badgers opened up their 2012 football season against the Division 1AA Northern Iowa Panthers. The Badgers did squeak out a victory in pathetic fashion, by a final score of 26-21. With the schedule only getting harder from here the Badgers need to pick it up quickly or it may be a long season for Wisconsin Badger Fans.
Head Coach Bret Bielema seems to be more worried about his running back Monte Ball winning the Heisman than running a functioning offense. It seemed like the Badgers were very predictable when giving Monte Ball 32 times for 120 yards, only averaging 3.8 yards a carry. James White only got the ball 9 times for 47 yards, and many times seemed like a better option than Ball in this game, I think if they would of went his way more it would of helped open up the running game a little more than it did.
The Badgers didn't seem to feel very comfortable with their new QB Danny O'Brien, and I have no idea why. O'Brien went 19 for 23 and a couple of his incompletions were drops or the receiver losing his footing, he seemed to be very comfortable in his new offense. With most defenses locking their eyes on Monte Ball this season, they might need to do some QB roll outs which would have seemed to have worked on every play action in yesterday's game. One thing that made last year's Badgers offense so tough is that they had a balanced offense, I think O'Brien gets used more in the passing game the offense will be alright.
Their defense played 2 3/4 good quarters but, like we seen in the 2012 Rose Bowl, have some weaknesses. The Badgers defense looks a lot like the Packers defense of last year, a lack of a pass rush and weak coverage from the secondary. If it wasn't for an Ethan Hemer tipped ball on 4th down last in the 4th quarter, we might not see the Badgers at 1-0 right now. Linebacker Mike Taylor seems to have trouble picking up his coverage assignments, getting burned a couple of times on big plays. Badgers fans can only hope that the defense improves from here and that it's performance vs. UNI was just working the rust off.
The Badgers have a ton of improving to do if they expect to get to their 3rd straight Rose Bowl appearance. Bielema says this team isn't the sexiest team but they get the W's, well that won't happen if they keep playing like they did Saturday. Step it up Badgers or it will be an off year for Wisconsin.
Oakland Raiders 2012 Preview
QB: This is the first year in many that the Raider shouldn't have much concern at the quarterback position. This is the first full season that Carson Palmer will have with the team, and that should help him with the offense. Lienart and Pryor as his backups are pretty solid for being #2 and #3.
RB: Darren McFadden is a premier running back, but the only question is if he can remain healthy for an entire season. If so the Raiders should be good to go, even with the loss of backup running back Michael Bush. Filling Bush's hole at the #2 running back is former Panthers RB Mike Goodson, he showed some flashes in his few starts for them in 2010 but again, like McFadden, the key question is can he remain healthy. Another exciting addition to me is FB and Wisconsin native Owen Schmitt, which the Raiders plan to use him as the Green Bay Packers use John Kuhn.
TE: With the departure of Kevin Boss, the Raiders really don't have star power at the tight end spot. They have 4 TEs in grooming with Brandon Myers, David Ausberry, Richard Gordon, and Kyle Efaw. With all of these young guys, expect a tight end by committee.
WR: I feel the Raiders are filled with mediocrity at the wide out position. Heyward-Bey has yet to prove to be worth the 8th overall pick back in 2009, but seems to be improving every year and with Carson Palmer throwing the rock for all of 2012 season I don't expect this year to be any different. Ford may not be the tallest receiver, but his speed makes up for it. Moore seemed to be a steal in the 4th round last season, he is a deep threat and long ball receiver and might quickly mover up the depth chart.
OL: Looks like the offensive line will be another group that is inconsistent. Wisniewski, one of the solid members of the line, will move from guard to center this season.
DL: When healthy the defensive line is one of the strongest part of the Oakland Raiders roster. Shaughnessy and Seymour missed some time back in 2011 which hurt the team, so if their starters can remain healthy I don't see why this line can be one of the best in the AFC West.
LB: The Raiders have been weak at LB for many years. They struggled against the run in 2011, With McClain and Curry ,who don't seem to be 3 down linebackers, anchoring the group, I don't see much improvement this season but look for this group changing in the years to come.
DB: The only thing that is worse for the Raiders than LB is their secondary. It was a joke last season, and with their only solid CB from last year, Routt, lost in free agency it's another position I don't expect improvements in 2012. As far as the safety slots go they do have decent starters in Branch and Huff, but don't have a lot of depth there. I can only hope that the offense scores enough points to make up for the lack of a run and pass defense.
ST: Lechler and Janikowski are two of the best at their respective positions, it's seems that punting and kicking are the few things that are consistent for the Raiders year in and year out. Jacoby Ford will more than likely be returning kicks again in 2012 and he has enough speed to be solid as well.
Overall I feel this won't be the Raiders year of making it into the playoffs, with an early prediction of 7-9. Don't look down Raiders fans I expect new GM Reggie McKenzie to get this team fully turned around in a very short period of time!

Packers Training Camp 2012 Preview
Today is the first day of the Packers 2012 Training Camp, I am going to go through each position and tell you what I expect or hope for for the coming season.
QB: I expect another dominating performance from Rodgers, the key question for this position is can Grahm Harrell be a quality back up like his successor Matt Flynn? I believe that with the amount of time Harrell served on the practice squad, he will do just fine in the backup role.
RB: James Starks is going to have to step up and be the main guy with Ryan Grant's departure. I don't see the running game being quite as successful as last season on the ground but with Saine and Green helping out in the backfield, they will be good options for some screen options.
TE: I don't see Jermichael Finley dropping as many balls as he did last year, I think last year might of actually been a humbling experience for him. DJ Williams will get more playing time this season, and maybe put a tad bit of pressure on Finley. Now the question remains, with Quarless, Crabtree, and Taylor, how many tight ends will the Packers keep on their roster this season.
WR: The wide out situation is only improving for the Packers. Starting with Jennings, Nelson, Cobb and Jones still makes one of the best receiver corps in the NFL. With their leading Donald Driver returning it's going to be an interesting funnel for the last spot on the roster for the WR with the much promising Gurley, Borel, and Smithson fighting for it.
OL: Pretty much the same offensive line from last season is returning this season, except for C Jeff Saturday. I'm hoping he can hold up for the duration of the season or Evan Dietrich-Smith will have to step up big time. It looks like Marshall Newhouse will start the season at left tackle and I look for him to play even more solid than he did last season with a full training camp to get ready for the season. Once Derrick Sherrod is 100% he should expect to see some time at the LT position as well.
DL: Packers 2nd round pick Jerel Worthy will be asked to step up big for the team in his rookie season. Putting pressure on the QB was the biggest weak spot on the team last year, with a little bit better DL lining up with Pickett and Raji should certainly spread the focus of opposing offensive linemen, helping cure that for the Pack in 2012.
LB: Last season the Packers kept 10 linebackers on the roster, I don't see that number changing to much this year. 1st round pick Nick Perry will be another guy asked to help shed focus off Pro Bowl LB Clay Matthews to help with the pass rush. It will be a fun preseason to watch Jones, Zombo, Walden, and So'oto make sure that they will remain with the Packers for the 2012 season.
DB: The secondary for the Packers should improve from last season as well as long as the pass rush does as well. With the release of Charlie Peprah today it appears that the Packers are expecting another draft pick, Jerron McMillan, to step up and play opposite of Morgan Burnett. One wish I do have, and I know it's not the Packer's MO to do this, is to take a look at free agent Jim Leonard.
ST: Not much change in the special teams for the Packers this season and that's a good thing. With Crosby kicking and Masthay punting, them having another middle of the road stats as they did last season leaves little to complain about. Cobb returning kicks will be exciting like last year, hopefully he would put us to much on the edge of our seats like last year, wondering if he is going to hang on to the ball when he doesn't fair catch it.
Overall I think the Packers are once again in good shape for the upcoming season. I don't think there will be another 15 win season, but my early prediction would be 12 or 13 wins. Now all we have to do now is sit back and get ready for some Green Bay Packers football!

Bigger May Not Always Be Better
Stock car racing is relatively new to the 103 year history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. NASCAR brought the Sprint Cup, their premier division, to the track for the first time in 1994. Now for the first time the NASCAR Nationwide series, their "minor league" division, will be competing in their first race at the 2.5mi track this Saturday July 28th. For the Nationwide Series to compete at the track they had to get ride of one other date on their schedule and that race was taken from their next door neighbors at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, a .6 mile track. Although this is a big deal for the series to be competing at IMS but I have to say, is bigger always better?
I'm sure most of the Nationwide Series competitors are really excited to get the chance to compete at the most historic track in all of motorsports, but as a fan I have to wonder, is the competition going to be worth it? The Nationwide Series races get very spread out when they are racing at tracks over a mile in length, and with the flat 2.5mi surface I predict a very uncompetitive race this Saturday. Even though many of the racers are excited to race at IMS in the Nationwide Series many drivers are really sadened not to be racing at the .6mi short track at IRP. The drivers are going to miss the dieing art of short track racing in NASCAR and the beating and banging that goes with it. Besides the competition aspect of going there I think having too many races at IMS would lose a little of the prestige of the track. From 1909 to 1994 the track only saw one race a year and since then it's added two more events with the Sprint Cup series and occasionally the Formula One and Le Mans Series as well. I believe that winning at Indy should be held for the highest series in racing as it currently stood up until this year.
Saturday is going to be a huge moment for the Nationwide Series, but I hope that after a trial run at IMS they will axe the idea and return to IRP very soon!
